Touchline — Live Match Tracking

Touchline is GoldenBoot's built-in live match tracking mode. Use it on the sideline during matches to track playing time, substitutions, game events, and statistics in real-time.

Overview

Touchline is designed to be used on the sideline during matches. It uses your existing GoldenBoot roster and opponent data — no setup or syncing needed. Touchline requires a Premium subscription.

Key Features:

  • Live game clock and period tracking
  • One-tap substitution management
  • Real-time player and goalkeeper statistics
  • TV-style score ticker with goal scorers and active cards
  • Live scoreboard — share a real-time score link with parents and fans
  • Game event logging (water breaks, referee calls, and more)
  • Match notes — jot down observations during play
  • Bench cards and opponent stat tracking
  • Game log with timestamped events
  • PDF match reports with optional game log
  • Saved matches appear automatically in your match history
  • Player nicknames and smart name disambiguation

Works on both iPhone and iPad in portrait or landscape orientation.

Getting Started

  1. Open GoldenBoot and navigate to Touchline
  2. Your full roster is available automatically
  3. Select your team and opponent
  4. Optionally filter by tag to narrow the roster
  5. Mark starters and tap Start Match
  6. After the match, save and the match appears in your match history with all stats populated

Pregame Setup

The Pregame Setup screen lets you configure the match before kickoff:

  • Team — Select which team you're tracking
  • Opponent — Choose from your opponent list (with logos if added)
  • Live Scoreboard — Toggle on to enable real-time score sharing. A shareable link is generated immediately so you can send it to parents and fans before kickoff.
  • Filter by Tag — Narrow the roster to a specific group (e.g., Varsity, JV)
  • Match Roster & Starters — Tap players to mark as starters (max 11). Swipe to remove from roster. Add players from the “Add Players” section below.

Main Screen

The Touchline screen is designed for quick access during a match:

  • Score Display — Tap to enter stats directly. Shows your score, opponent score, and the score ticker with goal scorers and minute markers
  • Player List — All players with status badges (Playing, Bench), time played, and jersey numbers. Names use nicknames when set, and similar names are automatically disambiguated (e.g., “Ma. Smith” vs “Mi. Smith”)
  • Substitution Queue — Pending substitutions waiting to be executed
  • HUD Panel — Quick-access buttons for match management

HUD Panel

The HUD provides one-tap access to match tools:

  • New Match — Start a fresh match
  • Sort — Change player list sort order
  • Game Log — View the full chronological event log (goals, cards, subs, period changes, custom events)
  • Game Event — Log a custom event with a timestamp (configurable in Settings)
  • Notes — Open the match notes editor
  • Share Live Score — Share the live scoreboard link (when Live Scoreboard is enabled)

Game Events

Log custom events during the match — anything that doesn't fit standard stats:

  • Tap Game Event in the HUD
  • Choose from your configured event list (e.g., “Water Break”, “Check Offside”, “Referee Discussion”)
  • The event is logged with the current match time
  • Events appear in the Game Log, are included in PDF match reports, and stream to the live scoreboard

Customizing Events:

  • Go to Settings → Game Events
  • Add, delete, or reorder your custom event list
  • Starter events include: Check Offside, Water Break, Injury Timeout, Weather Delay, Referee Discussion

Match Notes

Add free-form notes during the match:

  • Tap Notes in the HUD
  • Type observations, tactical notes, or reminders
  • Notes save automatically — no save button needed
  • Notes are stored with the match and visible in Match Detail after saving

Score Ticker

The score ticker at the top of the screen shows a live summary:

  • Goal scorers with minute markers (e.g., “Smith 23', Jones 67'”)
  • Opponent goal minutes
  • Active yellow and red cards
  • Names use nicknames and smart disambiguation for clarity

Game Log

The game log records every significant match event in chronological order:

  • Goals (with player name and minute)
  • Yellow and red cards
  • Substitutions (player in / player out)
  • Period changes (1st Half, Halftime, 2nd Half, etc.)
  • Custom game events
  • Match notes

View the log anytime by tapping Game Log in the HUD. The log is included in PDF match reports when the “Include Game Log” option is enabled. When Live Scoreboard is enabled, the game log also streams to the web scoreboard in real time.

Match-Day Roster

Player Sort Order

Customize how players are listed in Touchline:

  • By Jersey Number (default)
  • By First Name
  • Goalkeepers First, Then Number
  • Goalkeepers First, Then Name

Change the sort order in the HUD or in Settings. Your preference is saved between sessions.

Marking Starters

Before starting a match, mark your starting players:

  1. Tap a player to toggle them as a starter
  2. Starters are visually highlighted
  3. Their playing time begins when you start the match clock
  4. A maximum of one goalkeeper can be on the field at a time

Player Nicknames & Smart Names

GoldenBoot supports optional nicknames and automatic name disambiguation:

  • Nicknames — Set an optional nickname for any player. The nickname displays everywhere in Touchline instead of the auto-abbreviated name.
  • Smart Disambiguation — When multiple players share the same abbreviated name, GoldenBoot automatically uses more letters of the first name until each name is unique (e.g., “Ma. Smith” vs “Mi. Smith”).

Set nicknames in the player's profile under Players → Edit Player → Nickname.
